چکیده

Sixty-two patients were investigated for chronic intravascular hemolysis from 3 months to 6iS years following aortic valve replacement; 27 patients had Starr-Edwards prostheses and 35 fascia lata grafts. The findings are suggestive of a significantly higher incidence and degree of hemolysis in patients with Starr-Edwards prostheses compared to those with fascia lata grafts. In both groups regurgitation was an important factor in producing hemolysis. In the absence of regurgitation fascia lata grafts do not produce significant hemolysis, while Starr-Edwards valves traumatize the red cells even in the absence of regurgitation. StarrEdwards valves of small size are associated with hemolysis more often than larger ones

Double Valve Replacement (Mitral and Aortic) for Rheumatic Heart Disease: A 20-year experience with 300 patients.

Introduction: Rheumatic heart disease still remains one of the leading causes of congestive heart failure and death owing to valvular pathologies, in developing countries. Valve replacement still remains the treatment of choice in such patients. The aim of this study wasto analyze the postoperative outcome of  double valve replacement (Mitral and Aortic ) in patients of rheumatic heart disease. ...

A new method of autologous fascia lata replacement for aortic valvular disease.

Based on Senning's (1967) technique of aortic valve reconstruction with fascia lata, and on our own experience with Edwards' (Edwards, Karp, Robillard, and Kerr, 1969) and Ionescu's methods of fashioning fascia lata valves (Ionescu, Ross, Deac, Grimshaw, Taylor, Whitaker, and Wooler, 1970) we have developed a new procedure for the construction of aortic fascia lata valves without prosthetic sup...

Chronic Hemolysis Following Mitral Valve Replacement

The incidence and severity of chronic intravascular hemolysis was evaluated in a total of 41 patients following mitral valve replacement. Valve replacement was with a gamma-radiated frame-mounted aortic homograft in 21 patients and with a composite seat Starr-Edwards prosthesis, model 6310 or 6320, in 20 patients. The parameters used to assess hemolysis were hemoglobin, hematocrit, reticulocyte...

Intravascular haemolysis after valve replacement: comparative study between Starr-Edwards (ball valve) and Björk-Shiley (disc valve) prosthesis.

Seventy-four patients with single prosthetic valves (Björk-Shiley or Starr-Edwards) in the mitral or aortic position and 18 controls with rheumatic valvar heart disease were investigated for evidence of intravascular haemolysis. Serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was used as the most sensitive indicator of haemolysis. Raised concentrations were found in a third of 39 patients with Björk-Shiley p...

Hemolytic anemia following repair of ostium primum defect with a Teflon patch with a regurgitant jet through the mitral cleft has been described.4-7 Hemolytic anemia following insertion...
